I’m goin to be gone for another week house/dog sitting so I though I may as well post this so I can have a small update before I go and not leave anyone hanging forever.
I’ve been studying a lot of books on fashion design, patternmaking, illustration, and business. I thought if I can’t afford to go to school yet then why not teach myself through books and the library or purchased at discounts. This week I rented three fashion illustration books and I own one as well. I don’t have much time before I leave so I wanted to quickly put an emphasis on my favorite: Illustration for Fashion Design: Twelve Steps to the Fashion Figure.
I love that this book is so detailed but also makes drawing the basic croquis fashion figure near effortless. I think another huge factor that makes this book stand out is it has a disc of videos for each chapter you can watch and show the author drawing the fashion figure, rendering fabric, drawing each part of the body in detail, and even accessories. It also includes menswear and child’s wear which many of the books I’ve looked through do not but you do learn these in design school. This book is a bit pricey because it is a college level course book so I suggest buying it used on Amazon. I would say this book is best for beginning as well as intermediate fashion illustrators focusing on learning or refining skills in human anatomical drawing as well as the proportions for a fashion figure. The only thing this book does not have much of is completely dressed and rendered figures in color. I will suggest some books later that will go well with this book but I’ve got to run for now. Enjoy your drawing adventures!
